Saad Zaghloul Cultural Centre has announced a call for entries for the first Beyt El-Umma Drama Festival: Tawfik El-Hakim Round.

To be held between 24 and 28 April, the festival is for professionals and amateurs alike and aims to foster experimental efforts in the field of theatre.

Submissions will be accepted 20-24 March. Requirements include filling in a participation form at Saad Zaghloul Cultural Centre, along with providing three copies of the submitted script.

On 27 and 28 March, submitted plays will be performed to a festival jury. Those chosen for the festival will be notified by 30 March.

Submissions must be based on one or two actors only and their duration should be a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 35 minutes.

As this round is dedicated to the iconic writer Tawfik El-Hakim, submitted works must be adapted from El-Hakim’s plays or novels, or based on them. Directors are free to alter such pieces to their vision, and monodramas can be based on one of El-Hakim’s characters.

According to festival regulations, works must be free from any ethnic or social discrimination, excess profanity and religious offense, and generally follow accepted moral ethics.

First prize is worth EGP1,500, to be granted to the director of the winning play, while the second and third prize will receive EGP1,000 each.

Saad Zaghloul Culture Centre is part of the Beyt El-Umma (House of the People) National Museum, which was the residence of nationalist leader and founder of the Wafd Party, Saad Zaghloul, in the late 1800s. The centre aims to be a hub for different art forms, and offer space for artistic discourse, experimentation and connection.
