Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet is returning to the stage of the Cairo Opera House from 14 to 19 April.
Performed by the Cairo Opera Ballet Company, the ballet is directed by Abdel-Moneim Kamel with artistic director Erminia Kamel, while the Cairo Opera Orchestra will be conducted by Nader Abbassi.
Romeo and Juliet is one of the Cairo Opera Ballet Company’s most frequently performed works.
The ballet was recently performed during the closing gala of the International Ballet and Contemporary Dance Competition Domenico Modugno in Bari, Italy.
Last March, the company's first dancers, Ahmed Yehia and Anja Ahcin, preformed one of the famed pas de deux from Romeo and Juliet during the gala.
In 2014, the world celebrated the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth – the poet and playwright was born in April 1564 – and in the two years since, many international theatres and concert halls have included Shakespeare’s works in their programming.
Egypt's cities and their troupes are no exception, as they continue to present dance, theatre and music events that focus on the legendary playwright.
With Shakespeare’s passing away in April 1616, the year 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of his death.
As the year goes on, Egypt will continue to witness many tributes to Shakespearean genius, in both Cairo and Alexandria.
Programme:
14, 15, 17, 18 and 19 April at 8pm
Cairo Opera House, main hall, Zamalek, Cairo
