Between 13 May and 19 June, the Old Globe theatre in San Diego is hosting Camp David the play, a performance starring Egyptian actor and activist Khaled El-Nabawy.
The play premiered in Washington, DC, in April 2014 and was staged on Arena Stage, Kreeger Theatre, for one month.
The San Diego performances were attended by the family members of the late Egyptian president Anwar El-Sadat: Gamal El-Sadat, his wife Gihan El-Sadat, and granddaughter Nihal, and son-in-law Mahmoud Othman.
The play centers on the historical 13-day peace negotiations that took place in Camp David, between El-Sadat, American president Jimmy Carter and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin.
The accords are what led directly to the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty in 1979, and earned Sadat and Begin a shared Nobel Peace Prize, and is a historical moment that continues to resonate until today nearly 40 years later.
Camp David play is written by Pulitzer Prize winner Lawrence Wright, directed by Molly Smith, and produced by Arena Stage.
Starring alongside El-Nabawy is Richard Thomas as Carter, Ned Eisenberg as Begin and Hallie Foote as Carter’s wife.
Old Globe’s website presents the play as “a riveting and moving story filled with humor, insight, and surprises as three very different men, each devoutly committed to his faith, find that peace is possible and that hope is always the better choice.”
