Ahram Online , Tuesday 12 Mar 2019

In its second and final weekend, the 9th Hakawy International Arts Festival for Children will feature several international plays alongside a rich educational programme

The 9th edition of the Hakawy International Arts Festival for Children is offering many more interesting activities during the upcoming weekend; from 14 to 16 March.

The schedule of international shows for the festival's final weekend include EGG-tion Hero (Netherlands), a dance and theatre performance where the protagonist is an egg; Jabber (Netherlands),  a show about four birds and one nest whose jibber jabber lingo is not understood by anyone; Snow Eyes (Denmark), a dance production that explores the world from a child’s perspective; and Vu (France), a silent show about the small obsessions of life.

The programme will be topped by Stories on 4 Wheels, a storytelling experience presented to children at the Hanager open air area.

In addition, Hakawy prepared an educational programme that will continue throughout the weekend, offering workshops and masterclasses to the Egyptian artists.

The activities will include a masterclass (14 March) and a workshop (16 March) for singers and actors about making musical theatre performances, held by Theatergroep Kwatta, a troupe which has also come to Egypt with a play titled Jabber (14, 15 March in Cairo and 16 March in Minya).

Another educational element is a talk for actors by Dwayne Toemere and Lisa Grootgof, actors at Mass Theatre en Dans (15 March), who also perform EGG-tion Hero (14, 15 March).

“As AFCA, we do many activities, Hakawy festival being just one of them. We work a lot in art education throughout the year," explains Mohamed El-Ghawy, the founder and artistic director of the festival and founder and director of AFCA, the body running Hakawy.

"There is still a lot of room for development of the Egyptian theatre artists working with children. We want to support their artistic advancement through creating opportunities and supporting their production,” El-Ghawy adds.
