A Swiss-Egyptian contemporary dance collaboration at Rawabet

After holding the first set of performances in Bern, 'Whilst we gaze at soup' was performed in Cairo's Rawabet space

Thursday 1 Mar 2012

Karima Mansour, the choreographer and artistic director of Cairo's MAAT Centre of Contemporary Dance, in collaboration with the Swiss choreographer and dancer Daria Gusberti, will present a mixed-media performance entitled "Whilst We Gaze at Soup" from 29 February until 2 March. The performance is a project that mixes contemporary dance, music, video and theatre. Along with the choreographers, visual artist Maia Guberti, musician Mahmoud Rifaat, and theatre director Laila Soliman are also involved in the performance. After debuting in Switzerland at the Dempfzentrale in Bern on 10, 11 and 12 February, "Whilse we gaze at soup" will be playing Thursday, Friday, Saturday at the Rawabet theatre.

The artists had this to say regarding the performance:

"Do we need more than a dictionary, a mirror, an elephant, and a pair of eyes to meet? The self is projected onto the other; the other is reflected onto the self: thus creating various impressions. Different perspectives emerge and expectations arise... A joint, never-ending creation of an intricate web of images, a constant shift of sources and questions, within confronting moments of blindness and vision. Forcing us to wonder: Do you see what I see?"

29 Feburary, 1 and 2 March at 8pm
