Not sure what to do this weekend? Stand-up comedy, African music, opera and short films are among the exciting things to do both inside and outside the capital from Thursday through Sunday (3-6 May)

Tropfest Arabia at Jesuits Centre in Cairo at 7pm

One of two film workshops by Tropfest Arabia, organisers of one of the largest short film festivals for amateurs. Workshops will include basic information on filmmaking as well as requirements for Tropfest submissions. More info here.

Tunisian Ensemble at Jesuits Cultural Centre (JCC) in Minya at 8pm

Part of the Spring Festival, Dima Dima from Tunisia will perform their eclectic mix of western and eastern genres and traditional sounds. Free admission.

Panel Discussion on future of culture at Ewart Hall at 8pm

Part of the Spring Festival, a panel discussion moderated by Dina Abdel Rahman will discuss a 'Future Manifesto'. The discussion will be attended by artists from Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen. Free admission.

Last days of The Golden Calf exhibition at Al-Masar Gallery

Favourite scenes from operatic gems at the Cairo Opera House at 8pm

This is one of the two evenings that include arias from famous operas performed by the soloist singers from the Cairo Opera Company. With Cairo Opera Choir, Choir Master: Aldo Magnato; Director: Abdallah Saad; and Cairo Opera Orchestra conducted by Nayer Nagui. More info here  According to information on 4 May afternoon, this concert is cancelled.

Magda Emara plays Schumann at the Cairo Opera House at 8pm

Renowned Egyptian pianist Magda Emara will perform Schumann: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor, with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andreas Sporri. The evening will also include Rossini's Overture to The Silken Ladder and Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3 in A minor “Scottish”

Zapp 4 concert at Prince Taz Palace at 8pm

Part of the Spring Festival, a virtuoso string quartet from the Netherlands, Zapp 4 will invite audiences to their fusion of experimentation, improvisation and musical fantasy. Free admission.

Opening of exhibition Dust at Townhouse Gallery at 7pm

Xenia Nikolsaya’s Dust is both a photographic exhibition exploring Egypt’s abandoned architectural heritage, and a publication of texts and images. The exhibition will be accompanied by “Tracing Time” symposium on 12 May.

Short Films Forum at Bibliotheca Alexandrina at 7pm

Screening of four films that took part in the Student Film Competition at Cannes 2010. Total duration of four films 86 minutes. All films are subtitled in English. Free entry.

Egypt Above All exhibition at the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art

Museum of Modern Egyptian Art at the Cairo Opera House grounds will host Ramzy Mustafa. This exhibition is "an invite to all, showcasing the importance of developing Egypt through fine arts." More details here.
