Late Egyptian actor Maher Selim
Renowned Egyptian actor Maher Selim died in the early hours of Thursday 2 September 2021 after a long struggle with illness, the Egyptian Actors Syndicate revealed. His funeral took place a few hours later.
Selim graduated from the Acting and Directing Department of the Institute of Theatrical Arts and embarked on a fruitful career in theatre and cinema.
In the early 1990s, he also received a scholarship to continue his studies at the Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica Silvio D'Amico in Rome, Italy.
Linked to the Avant-garde Cairo Theatre, Selim performed in numerous plays directed by well-known Egyptian directors such as Samir El-Asfouri. He took to the stage in plays such as ‘The Bald Soprano ‘(or ‘The Bald Prima Donna’), ‘Cairo 80’, along with over 20 other works.
He also held a number of positions in Egypt’s theatrical scene. He was the director of the Avant-garde Theatre in 2012, head of the Artistic House of Theatre and director of the National Theatre Festival in Cairo in 2013, advisor to the Cultural Production Sector in 2014, and a member of the Supreme Committee for International and Local Festivals at the Supreme Council of Culture.
Additionally, Selim participated in many local and international theatre festivals.
Alongside his theatre work, Selim was also well-known for his roles in popular television series such as: ‘Garden City Ladies’ in 1997-98, ‘Al-Gamaah’ in 2010, ‘Private Number’ in 2012, ‘A Girl Named Zat’ in 2013, ‘Kafr Delhab’ in 2017, ‘Dofaat Al-Qahira’ in 2019, ‘Lams Aktaf’ in 2019, along with ‘Fursa Thanya’, ‘Regalat Al-Bayt’, ‘Handwritten’, and ‘Iilaa Ana’ in 2020.
His illustrious film career also started at the hands of numerous renowned directors such as Youssef Chahine, who cast him in his movies ‘Alexandria: Again and Forever’ in 1989 and ‘Alexandria... New York’ in 2004. He also appeared in ‘18 Days’ in 2011 — which had numerous directors — ‘The Treasure’ in 2017 by Sherif Arafa, ‘Khalawees’ in 2018 by Khaled El-Halafawy, ‘Immobilia Crime Story’ in 2019 by Khaled El-Hagar.
Selim’s latest film appearances include Amir Ramses’ ‘Hazr Tagaoul’ (‘Curfew’) in 2020 starring Elham Shaheen, Amina Khalil, and Ahmed Magdy; and ‘Waafet Regala’ in 2021 — which was directed by Ahmed El-Gendy and starred Maged El-Kedwany, Bayoumy Fouad, and Sayed Ragab.
