Sharm El-Sheikh Int'l Theater Festival for Youth announces nominees for Lenin El-Ramly Playwright Award

Gearing up for its sixth edition scheduled to take place between 6 and 11 October, Sharm El-Sheikh International Theater Festival for Youth (SITFY) announced the list of nominees for Lenin El-Ramly Playwright Award.

The award is part of the yearly festival's aim to encourage and shed light on young writers. It honours the late Egyptian playwright Lenin El Ramly, who passed away in February 2020.

Egyptian and Arab playwrights were invited to submit their texts in numerous categories between 31 August and 30 September. The chosen nominees will now compete for the award with the winner to be announced during the festival.

In an official statement, widow Lenin El-Ramly, writer Fatma Al-Maadoul, expressed her pleasure with the award's name, adding that "the competition will lead to a bright future as it introduces new ways of creative thinking. It also adds cultural depth to the festival with theatre writing playing a vital role in creating future theatrical landscape."

The winners will be announced during the festival's sixth edition that will run between 6 and 11 October in Sharm El Sheikh. 

Held annually, the SITFY is the first of its kind to be organised in Sinai. It was launched with the aim of providing opportunities to young theatre practitioners while decentralising the artistic scene and reviving tourism in South Sinai.

The SITFY's founder and president is Mazen El-Gharabawy, and the artistic director is Ingy El-Bastawi.

Renowned Egyptian playwright Lenin El-Ramly's body of work includes numerous well known titles such as In Plain Arabic and Point of View. His film contributions include scenarios for movies such as The Terrorist, Bekeet and Adeela and The Ostrich and the Peacock. In his creative journey, El-Ramly often capitalised on satire and daring ridicule of Middle Eastern culture and politics.
