Cairo's Al-Taliaa Theatre (Avant-Garde Theatre) launched a new project, the Al-Taliaa Orchestra, dedicated to reviving Egypt’s musical theatre heritage, with auditions continuing until 2 February

Currently, the theatre is auditioning young singers and musicians who will form a new cast specialised in performing musical theatre. The selected candidates will be offered training workshops and perform during a monthly concert, presenting songs from musicals and operettas.

Theatre director Adel Hassan clarified that "the orchestra project aims to form a musical troupe that will focus on Egyptian musical theatre heritage in order to preserve the best known gems from this art form."

Hassan added that "Al-Taliaa Theatre will make sure to bring back the repertoire that is deeply ingrained in the Egyptian audiences' minds."

The Al-Taliaa Orchestra initiative is a cooperation between the Al-Taliaa Theatre and its umbrella, the Artistic House of Theatre, a body headed by director Khaled Galal and operating under the culture of ministry.

The auditions, which started Sunday, will continue until 2 February. Applications are still open to singers aged 18-45, who can apply by contacting the theatre.

Al-Taliaa Theatre is one of the oldest and most important Cairo theatres. Located near the National Theatre and Puppet Theatres, Al-Taliaa was founded by late director Saad Ardash in 1962, first carrying the name “Gaib Theatre” and dedicated to presenting experimental theatre works.

Al-Taliaa has always been at the heart of the Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre (CIFET) which launched in the late 1980s and brought countless avant-garde and experimental plays to Al-Taliaa's stages (among other theatres across the city.)

Throughout the history, many renowned Egyptian directors staged plays in Al-Taliaa.

Today, it contains two halls.

In 2022, the theatre celebrated its 60th anniversary by revealing several new projects and presenting four plays by veteran Egyptian directors, including Nasser Abdel-Moneim, Essam El-Sayed and Ahmed Mokhtar.

The Al-Taliaa Theatre Club, an initiative open to audiences aims to spread theatrical culture, discover and develop theatrical talents, and attract interested audiences to practice theatrical activities. It includes periodic meetings with theatre pioneers and stars, and training programs implemented by Taliaa Studio.

The club has held meetings with several artists such as director Samir El-Asfory, actor Ahmed Kamal and actress Safaa El-Tokhy, among others.
