Famed Canadian Cirque du Soleil returns to Cairo with OVO show

The famous Canadian circus company Cirque du Soleil is scheduled to visit Cairo in March 2023, this time performing their highly successful show OVO.

The company will give several performances between 8 and 18 March at the Cairo Stadium’s indoor hall.

The organisers present the show as “funny and chaotic, yet adorable and wonderful,” offering extraordinary showmanship to tickle the imagination.

“OVO charms our inner child with its sweet exuberance,” the description continues, pointing to 54 performing artists from 16 countries taking part in this creative extravaganza.

OVO, a word that means “egg” in Portuguese, brings to the stage high-level acrobatic acts that redefine the limits of the human body.

The show that premiered in 2009 in Montreal is the company's 25th production. Ever since it has been performed to over seven million people in 155 cities in 26 different countries. Meawhile, many other equally successful performances were also added to Cirque du Soleil's repertoire.

Taking inspiration from the world of insects, OVO is a touring show that was created and directed by Deborah Colker, a Brazilian writer, theatre director, dancer and choreographer, who, among numerous achievements, was also the movement director and choreographer of the 2016 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.

In the 100-minute long OVO, the audience is offered what the troupe calls to be “a riot of energy,” filled with amazing ants, flexible dragonflies, silky spiders, and crazy crickets, among other creatures presenting a total of 10 acrobatic acts set in a colourful ecosystem.

Cirque du Soleil’s performances in Cairo are a rare opportunity for the Egyptian public to attend a show by internationally renowned circus artists, let alone the famed Canadian company.

Last time the company visited Egypt was in 2020, right before the pandemic shut the doors to performers, staging a different show from their repertoire. Their previous visits - such as the 2007 apperance in one of the 6th of October city's hotels - were mostly private events showcasing segments of the troupe's work.

The ticket prices to Cirque du Soleil’s show range between EGP 800 ($27) and EGP 3600 ($120). Tickets can be purchased here.

OVO will again visit the region, performing for Dubai audiences in mid-June 2023.

Founded in 1984 with a troupe of 20 performers, the Cirque du Soleil grew to a major Québec-based organisation providing high-quality artistic entertainment. Today, with dozens of shows under their belt, the company includes 1,300 performing artists with a total of 4,000 employees, all representing more than 50 different countries.
