Women's Prison — theatre play

Women's Prison (Segn El-Nesa) is a play by prominent playwright and activist Fathiya El-Assal (1933-2014) that inspired a highly successful 2014 TV series with the same name.

The play, which premiered on 31 March, explores the emotional experiences of imprisoned women, delving into their struggles, relationships, and the harsh realities of a patriarchal society.

Youssef Morad directed Women's Prison, which includes large music and choreography segments with compositions by Mohamed Ezzat.

The play features Haidi Abdelkhalek, Hanady Abdelkhalek, Sherihan El-Shazly, Nashwa Hassan, Aya Abu-Zeid, Safy Fahmy, Doaa El-Zeidi, Randa Gamal, Layla Magdy, Lily Mourad, Geni Atwa, Irini Magdy, Walaa El-Gendy, and Ikrami Waziry.

 

Hawadit - theatre play
Every day except Wednesdays and Sundays, 7pm
Artistic Creativity Center, Cairo Opera House grounds, Zamalek, Cairo

Written and directed by Khaled Galal, the play Hawadit is part of the graduation project of the third batch (Group A) of the Future Stars programme, an initiative he created at the Creativity Centre, which he manages.

The play, which premiered in June, consists of 25 scenes showcasing all the young talents.
Hawadit, which translates to Stories, blends folk tales and Egyptian heritage in a form that resonates with contemporary reality.

 

Carmen - theatre play
Every day except Tuesdays, 9pm
Al-Taliaa Theatre (behind National Theatre), Attaba Square, Cairo (Zaki Tolimat Hall)

Directed by Nasser Abdel Moneim, the play premiered in April of this year and continues to draw large audiences to the El-Taliaa (Avant-garde) Theatre.

The play is based on the famed novel by French writer Prosper Mérimée, adapted for the stage by Mohamed Ali Ibrahim, and stars Reem Ahmed, Mido Abdelkader, Nihal Fahmy, Mohamed Hassib, Lydia Suleiman, Abdelrahman El-Gamil, Ahmed Alaa, Mohamed El-Aragawy, and Mohamed El-Badaly.

Carmen is the story of a free-spirited Gypsy dancer who seduces a soldier, Don José, leading him to abandon his duty, fall into obsession, and spiral into a life of crime.

When Carmen grows tired of him and falls for a charismatic bullfighter, Don José, consumed by jealousy, confronts her. In the end, he murders Carmen, unable to accept her rejection and independence.

 

Soul of the Picture - theatre play
Thursday 3 and Friday 4 July, 8pm
Al-Hosabir Theatre, El-Teraa El-Bolaqeya St, behind the Railway (Sekka El-Hadid) Hospital, Downtown Cairo

Written and directed by Mahmoud Gamal Hadini, the performance is presented by the Al-Kasr Theatre troupe.

While looking into the hidden side of the world of cinema, the play does not shed light on the stars but instead on those who live the dream behind the camera. It reveals the lives of hundreds of faces who live the story beyond what is conveyed on the screen.

Their lives are filled with heroism, struggles, laughter, and tears.

 

Ali El-Helbawy - music
Friday 4 July, 8.30pm
Wisdom Hall, El-Sawy Culturewheel, 26th of July street, Zamalek, Cairo

Egyptian singer and Islamic Sufi chanter Ali El-Helbawy’s repertoire includes songs about love, faith, and those carrying patriotic themes, in addition to some traditional covers.

El-Helbawy performs frequently at various Cairo venues and often collaborates with numerous other performers. He has been featured in several compositions created by the Egyptian-German ensemble Cairo Steps.  

 

Amr Diab - music
Friday 4 July, 9pm
Marassi, North Coast

Amr Diab is among the most prominent and regionally recognised pop singers, drawing crowds of thousands to his live concerts and ranking as one of the most listened-to artists on streaming platforms.

With over 30 albums and a vast collection of regional and international trophies and awards spanning his four-decade career, the megastar, affectionately dubbed "El-Haddaba" (The Hill) by fans, continues to maintain an ever-growing fan base.

Besides Amr Diab, the evening will also feature techno artist Monolink and the DJ WhoMadeWho.

Hamel Hamel - theatre play
Monday 7, Tuesday 8 July, 7.30pm
Rawabet Art Space, 5 Hussein Basha Al Meamari, Downtown Cairo

The performance follows the life journey of a woman in a show based on the play "You Are Free" by Lenin El-Ramli, directed by Omar Raafat.

King Lear - theatre play
Tuesday 8 July
National Theatre, Attaba Square, Cairo

The Shakespearean masterpiece returns to the stage of the National Theatre, with a premiere scheduled for 8 July, followed by performances throughout July.

The renowned protagonist of King Lear is portrayed by Yehia El-Fakharany, who has taken on this role several times. The first time he portrayed King Lear on the National Theatre stage was back in 2001.

The play featured Egypt's renowned actors, including Sawsan Badr, Farouk El-Fishawy (1952–2019) and Ashraf Abdel Ghafour (1942–2023), Salwa Mohamed Ali, Rania Farid Shawky, and Ahmed Fouad Selim, among others.

This time, the play is directed by Shadi Sorour, and, in addition to El-Fakharany, it features actors Tarek El-Desouky, Hassan Youssef, Mohamed El-Ezayzi, Eman Ragaa, Amal Abdallah, Ahmed El-Nasser, Islam Abbas, Diaa Shafik, and Hamdy Attia.
