One of William Shakespeare's most popular comedies, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,' will be performed at the American University in Cairo starting Wednesday, 17 April, as part of its Arts Department programme. The performance will be followed by a number of other theatrical performances during the upcoming week.

In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare reaches to a play-within-a-play, a prcedure also used by him in several other comedies, as well as by a number of international playwrights.

The play involves three major plot lines: the tempestuous marriage of Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the Fairies; the love problems of four young people from Athens; and a the travails of a troupe of amateur thespians who prepare a theatrical performance for the wedding of the duke of Athens and the queen of the Amazons. The three plot lines intersect – with comedic results – throughout the play.

Programme

Malak Gabr Theatre, 17, 18, 21, 22 April at 7pm; and 20-23 April at 5pm
