'Fabrica' is an art initiative seeking to reinvigorate the performance arts scene in Egypt, with a focus on musical theatre.
Led by renowned soprano singer Nevine Allouba, the group not only tackles Egyptian theatre, but also translates classic Western works into colloquial Arabic, reinventing stage productions and bringing them to Egyptian audiences with an entirely fresh and different flavour.
As of Sunday, 19 January, and until Wednesday, 29 January, the group will be touring the United States, performing Les Misérables — the world-famous musical based on Victor Hugo's novel of the same name — in Arabic with an Egyptian dialect.
The tour is sponsored by non-profit organisations Izdahar and Meridian International, as well as the US embassy in Cairo, in an effort to foster cross-cultural collaboration and to shed light on post-revolution art forms emerging in Egypt.
The tour will not only consist of performances, but also theatre workshops, and will span several cities, including Boston, Washington, DC and New York.
