The Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF) will take place between 20 March and 11 April at venues in downtown Cairo and Alexandria.
The opening day will infuse Egypt's capital with dynamic artistic activities, including the smART Mobile Film Festival, with screenings from midday across downtown Cairo.
The official opening will take place at 8pm at Radio Cinema. The night will include a screening of Underground / On the Surface, a documentary by Salma El-Tarzi.
The film follows the underground shaabi music scene, known as ‘mahraganat’. It focuses on the genre's surge of popularity following the revolution. Oka, Ortega, and Wezza, three of the movement’s most prominent artists, are suddenly put under the spotlight, so the question is: will they be able to preserve their identity as independent artists?
At 10pm, Islam Chipsy from Egypt and Skip&Die from the Netherlands will perform techno and shaabi music at the Sherazade Nightclub.
