The 41st Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) opened on Tuesday with Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. A $160 million Netflix production based on Charles Brandt’s book I Heard You Paint Houses, it stars Robert De Niro in his ninth collaboration with Scorsese, along with Academy Award winners Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. Headed by producer Mohamed Hefzy (who was also last year’s president), CIFF is dedicated to film critic Youssef Cherif Rizkallah, its artistic director since 2000, who passed away in July. Critic Ahmed Shawki is acting artistic director this year.

The festival will also shed light on veteran Egyptian filmmaker Sherif Arafa (honoured for his lifetime achievement with the Faten Hamama Honorary Award), which will also go to legendary American-British filmmaker Terry Gilliam, and actress Menna Shalaby (honoured with the Faten Hamama Excellence Award). Designed by famous sculptor Adam Henein, the awards are granted every year to senior and promising artists in the local and international cinema scene.

For the first time in its history this year CIFF (20-29 November) features 18 world premieres, 17 international premieres, 84 MENA premieres, five African premieres and seven Middle East premieres. It will screen a total of 150 films (130 feature films, and 20 shorts) representing 63 countries. Mexican cinema is the guest of honour. Activities include honouring Mexican filmmakers and screening eight films.

Competitions include the main International Competition (15 films), a Critics Week (seven films, with two awards: the Shadi Abdel-Salam Award for Best Film, and the Fathy Farag Award for Best Artistic Contribution), and the Cinema of Tomorrow short film competition. The festival will also grant $15,000 for Best Arab Film Award, offered to the producer of a film chosen by the jury, especially for any Arabic film participating in any one of the festival’s three competitions. Out-of-competition sections include Special Screenings, an International Panorama, a Panorama of New Egyptian Films, Midnight Screenings and a revamped Virtual Reality section.

In its last edition, the CIFF introduced the Cairo Industry Days, which brings together local and international filmmakers, producers and other figures involved in the industry, with the aim of generating opportunities for Arab filmmakers and storytellers. Industry panels include film and TV workshops, masterclasses and in-conversation sessions, conferences and summits, as well as the Cairo Film Connection, dedicated to supporting film projects in development and post-production.
