In an arguably unwarranted escalation, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi set off an alarming standoff between the US and China by visiting Taiwan.

In the first such high-profile visit in 25 years, Pelosi pledged an “unwavering commitment” to the democratic island republic which China regards as a breakaway province, to which the Chinese authorities responded by sending warplanes to perform live-fire exercises at the frontier separating the mainland from Taiwan in the Taiwan Strait.

The Chinese authorities called Pelosi’s move, which is reportedly contested within the US itself, “extremely dangerous”. They vowed that Washington would “pay the price” and declared that any attempt at independence would be “shattered by the powerful force of the Chinese people.”
