“SamBoozies: An Aesthetics of “Junk” is an exhibition by Samia Mehrez. Longtime AUC professor and celebrated author Samia Mehrez started her SamBoozies project with a simple idea: as a way to up-cycle old empty bottles; but they quickly developed into more complex beings that have used up years of all kinds of hoarded “junk” from textiles and plastic to yarn, buttons, and lace, among other items. They have become creatures that embody personal, national, and global histories and imaginaries. Their story is intricately related to the history of the AUC Tahrir campus and Mehrez’s personal history within it (closing 15 November).
