“Something Else III” is an exceptional artistic celebration, under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Egypt Tourism Authority, where the vast historic Saladin Citadel is decorated for the first time for a whole month to display the latest contemporary works of art, including drawing, photography, sculpture, by more than 150 local and international artists, where history meets modernity in one place. The third edition entitled “What Then?” is envisioned by Darb 1718, and Citadel Asset Management Company and also offers art performances, films, music, diverse workshops, street art, talks and lectures by local as well as international artists and art connoisseurs taking place in many different art and cultural spaces in Cairo. The event aims to attract international attention to Egypt as a vibrant art producer within the regional and international art scene. Curators will be led by Simon Njami. The exhibits will include the sustainability and the climate crisis as thematic areas to explore
As part of "Something Else", the Goethe-Institute Cairo presents the collective exhibition “Room 20”, which combines works from Egyptian artist Nourhan Maayouf, German photographer Valentin Goppel and Egyptian multidisciplinary artist Mo Al Dee. It showcases Goppel’s photo series “Between the Years”, Maayouf’s her interactive online performance “Wanna Squeeze?” as well as Al Dee’s video installation work “Portraits from the East”.
The exhibition “Room 20” uses this opportunity to look back to the years in-between since the outbreak of Corona Virus and to present those works that have been created amidst this historical caesura that has left its mark in human biographies worldwide: The pandemic stands exemplified for a paralyzing time in world history, that shattered human interaction, leading to a collective feeling of anxiety and loneliness. At the same time, online-communication became an important – albeit limited – tool for interpersonal connection. The photographic and video works on display portray the challenges and consequences of isolation, following three artists from Egypt and from Germany in their endeavor to confront the paralyzing pandemic state through creativity and activity, while at the same time creating important testimonies of this historical caesura (24 November- 23 December).
