The Photographic Gallery
"Celestial Scapes", an exhibition of astrophotography by award-winning photographer Amr Abdul-Wahab.
Over millennia, the Cosmos has always been gazed at with wonder and awe by humans. The celestial heavens provide us with a measure of time and location, on setting tides and earthquakes and more. Abdul Wahab directs his camera and telescope to the sky to open up this world and capture an array of celestial bodies in perpetual motion, giving us abstract, divine-like aesthetic visions and striking compositions. The exhibition features a series of celestial scapes captured from deserts, oases and coastal cities across Egypt. The body of work depicts planets, galaxies, snippets of orbitals, meteors, constellations and interstellar dust, recorded through long exposure photography through a complex process that sometimes extends to 48 hours to produce a single image. The exhibition celebrates the photographer’s career spanning over ten years and is characterized by trial and error in testing technology in developing new photographic techniques, finally earning him NASA recognition in 2022, when he won the Photo of the Year award. "Photo Kegham of Gaza: Unboxing" exhibition is meticulously crafted and curated by Kegham Djeghalian Jr. (1915-1981) as he converses with his grandfather’s legacy and significance. The grandson’s primary research is focused on exploring Kegham of Gaza – the person, the photographer and his legacy – and through this, is confronted with a non-linear reading of Gaza’s potential histories. The notions of ruptures, disrupted histories and an ‘unmade archive’ mark Kegham Jr’s approach in engaging with the surviving fraction of the archive; a concept he negotiates to be crucial for attempting to demystify Gaza: the land, the people, the memory and the subjective histories that once were. Delve into the rich tapestry of Gaza’s visual history as captured by the lens of Djeghalian over nearly four decades. His photographic legacy transcends mere documentation, offering a vivid portrayal of the social, official, political, and everyday aspects of life in Gaza.
Join us on an immersive archival journey expertly guided by his grandson, the esteemed artist, creative director and educator, Kegham Djeghalian Jr., as he unveils the profound impact of one of Gaza’s foremost photographers (26 April - 12 May).
