Fri 18, 11am-1pm: “Should We Believe Everything We See?”, in this session of the scientific workshop, journalist Taïna Cluzeau will show children, starting the age of eight, how to trick their own brain using optical illusions. She will discuss with them how the eye works and they will create their own illusion. Tues 22, 6pm: “The Taste of Books”, an encounter with Gilles Gauthier, on the occasion of the publication of his latest 2021 novel, Un si near ennemi (such a near enemy), which is inspired by real events. Gauthier is advisor to the president of the Arab World Institute, and translator of Egyptian novelist Alaa El-Aswani. He was a diplomat, mainly in the Arab world (Iraq, Algeria, Egypt, Bahrain, Lebanon) and ambassador to Yemen. He published his autobiography Between Two Shores, 50 Years of Passion for the Arab World in 2018. He is currently a member of the jury for the Lagardère Prize for Arab Literature. The meeting is in French and translated into Arabic.

 

 

Italian Cultural Institute 

Italy is celebrating the 700th anniversary of the passing of Dante Alighieri, from 12 March to 4 July 2021. On the occasion of Dante’s anniversary, the deadline for the competition for schools and universities extended to 17 June, for more information, go to the IIC website. Also, the Italian Institute continues to post videos in Arabic with translations from Dante Alighieri’s masterpiece The Divine Comedy to bring the Arab-speaking public closer to the work of the supreme poet. Videos are directed by Giabluca Barbadori, with the special participation of Ashraf Farouk, Amir Salaheddin, Sherine Hegazy, and Sara El-Mokadem.

Mon 21, 4.30pm, Online: On the occasion of the publication of the new Arabic translation of Dante Alighieri’s Vita Nova, translator Hussein Mahmoud will present his latest work, together with Riccardo Starnotti of the Association Amici di Dante in Casentino, PhD student Abeer Alsayed and the IIC Director Davide Scalmani.

Mon 21, 6pm: To celebrate International Yoga Day, IIC Cairo organises a Hatha Yoga session open to all on the Institute’s terrace. Given the restrictions due to social distancing, the event can accommodate a maximum of 20 people and entrance is on the order of arrival. Kindly bring your own mat.
