Mon 22, 6-7.45 pm, Cairo time, (Online Webinar): “Syrian and Lebanese Crises in a Mirror”, is the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP)’s Tahrir Dialogue event no.95. Syria has been in protracted conflict since 2011. This conflict affected Lebanon severely in many aspects. Lebanon entered a significant economic and financial crisis in 2019. Its effect on the decline of the Syrian pound exchange rate has been much more potent than eight years of conflict and destructions. However, are both Lebanese and Syrian States able to tackle their social, economic, regional and recovery challenges?. The talk will be hosted by founding dean of GAPP Nabil Fahmy, and panelists are: President of the Circle of Arab Economists Samir Aita, Nassif Hitti, former Lebanese foreign minister, and Ramzy Ezz Eldin, former assistant secretary-general of the UN and Deputy Envoy for Syria.

Italy has been celebrating the 700th anniversary of the passing of Dante Alighieri. Also, the Italian Institute continues to post videos in Arabic with translations from Dante Alighieri’s masterpiece The Divine Comedy to bring the Arab-speaking public closer to the work of the supreme poet. Videos are directed by Giabluca Barbadori, with the special participation of Ashraf Farouk, Amir Salaheddin, Sherine Hegazy, and Sara El-Mokadem.

Thurs 25, 7pm: “Meeting with Egyptian writer Ahmed Al-Qarmalawi, Winner of the 2021 Katara Prize”, a meeting with Egyptian novelist Ahmed Al-Qarmlawi, will be moderated by writer Imane El Chimi, with a critical reading by Alexandrian writer Mustafa Zaki and will be followed by a signing session. Al-Qarmlawi has published two collections of short stories and five novels, in addition to a translated book entitled Cafés… Etc, By French writer Didier Blonde and winner of the Georges Brassens Prize in
2019. He published five novels including The
Last Tweet, 2014, Destino, 2015, Summer Rains in 2016, which won the Sheikh Zayed prize for
the book in 2018. His work A Last Call to Passengers, 2018 received the award for best novel at the Cairo International Book Fair in 2019 and finally The Heirs of Al Sheikh, 2020, which this year received the Katara Prize for Arab Fiction.
