Thurs 20, 6pm: On the occasion of the bicentenary of the deciphering of hieroglyphs by Champollion, French writer Pascale Bellamy will present her first novel, The Hidden Temple of Zerzura, or the Epic of Amon Stone, published by Douro publishing House in 2021. The novel evokes Siwa’s Pharaonic past and its legends.
Fri 21, 1.30pm: The media library invites its young audience (age 8-12) to a series of reading clubs around the International Gems offered by the French Institute and the Youth Book and Press Fair. Sun 23, 6pm: “From Coptic to Hieroglyphs: In the Shadow of Champollion, the Coptic Priest Youhanna El-Chiftichi” seminar features Coptologist and Egyptologist Ashraf Sadek. As part of the bicentenary of the deciphering of hieroglyphs, Professor Sadek evokes the most important phase of this journey: the teaching of the Coptic language brought to Champollion by Father Youhanna El-Chiftichi. Knowledge of the Coptic language allowed Champollion to retrace the meaning of the hieroglyphs.
