Mon 23, 7pm: “Beyond Limits – The Contribution of the Club of Rome” roundtable is organized by the Club of Rome dedicated to the theme of sustainability as part of Week of the Italian Language in the World (14-23 October). It features professors Paolo Battinelli and Ugo Bardi engage in a dialogue on the topic of sustainability and present the activities of the Club of Rome. Founded by A. Peccei in 1968, the Club of Rome aims to analyze the issues of a globalized growth in light of scientific solutions.

Fri 20, 6pm-8pm: “Remembering Professor Doris Enright-Clark Shoukri (1926 – 2023)” memorial event honors Professor Shoukri, who dedicated over 60 years of her life to enriching the AUC experience. From her tenure as a distinguished professor of English to her influential administrative roles as Chair of Humanities, Chair of English and Comparative Literature, and founder of the English Language Institute, her impact on the university is immeasurable.
Professor Shoukri also established the esteemed Distinguished Visiting Professor programme. Through this initiative, she welcomed renowned international creative writers, fostering a landscape of intellectual exchange. In addition to her scholarly achievements, Professor Shoukri was a gifted poet and writer of short stories. The memorial programme will include talks, “Professor Doris Shoukri: Poet, Writer, and Remarkable Educator” by Ahmad Dallal, AUC President, “Remembering a Beloved Professor” Tahia Abdel-Nasser, ECLT Department Chair, and “Doris Shoukri: A Son’s Perspective” by Medical Doctor
Kamal Shoukri, Doris Shoukri “Two Poems for 2011 Revolution” (read by Senior Instructor Kathleen Saville, RHET Dept. Doris Shoukri in her own voice: A brief statement of Professor Shoukri to her students in her last class at AUC, and a recorded song by her student (Gala El-Hadidi, mezzo-soprano) in honor of Professor Shoukri. The talks will be accompanied by a musical programme featuring John Baboukis on piano playing music of Bach, Scarlatti and Purcell, music of Weiss and Barrios Mangore, Pavel Kuzma, guitar and lute, AUC Chamber Singers, Sarah Boulos on piano and many more. Signing the Remembrance Book of Doris Shoukri.
