Oriental Hall Sat 10, 6-8pm: “Preserving Heritage: Manuscripts, Documents and Journals” talk will discuss what was the scale of written literary production in Arabic? What were these works, and where are they to be found today? The 'Ilm Institute has been engaged in the ambitious task of preserving, archiving, and digitizing the Arabic written word. It has built an unprecedented digital database documenting almost two million manuscripts and numerous journals and periodicals in the Arabic language. In this lecture, the founder and director of 'Ilm Institute, Abdel-Aati El-Sharqawi, will present an overview of this monumental effort to preserve the Arabic literary heritage, providing examples of medieval manuscripts and more recent literary journals and periodicals.
