Thurs 7, 6pm: "Verrucci Bey" conference is held on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Italian architect Ernesto Verrucci Bey, a key figure in Italian and Egyptian history and in the dialogue between the two cultures. It is accompanied by a one-day photographic exhibition presenting the context in which Verrucci worked, in light of recent historical/architectural studies. The conference that will be conducted in English will feature three speakers: professor Flavia Orsati, art critic and academic board member of the Heritage International Institute, professor Paolo Girardelli, professor of History of Art and Architecture at the Department of History, Boğaziçi University, and Heidi Shalaby, professor of Urban Construction at the Faculty of Architecture and Engineering at the Zagazig University and Head of Central Administration of Technical Affairs, National Organization for Urban Harmony at Ministry of Culture. Emigrating to Egypt when he was only 23, Verrucci quickly attained prestigious positions, culminating in his appointment as Chief Architect of the Royal Palaces by King Fouad. A key player in the renewal of Egyptian institutions and the architectural revival of cities, he also influenced the customs, economy and culture of the time. The exhibition not only reconstructs his biographical events, artistic and architectural works, and archaeological discoveries, but also outlines the complex diplomatic and cultural interactions of his life, offering an overview of Egyptian social dynamics in the transition between the 19th and 20th centuries.
