Small Theatre 

Afrah Alqoba, play produced by the Youth Theatre Company is based on Naguib Mahfouz novel bearing the same name. It casts Abdel-Moneim Riyad, Mohamed Tamer, Samar Allam, Fatema Adel, Mena Nabil and many more. Décor and lighting by Amr Al-Ashraf, costumes designed by Abeer Badrawi, movement designs by Monadel Antar. It is written and directed by Mohamed Youssef Almansour 

(Performances run on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 9pm).

 

Metropol (The Children’s National) Theatre

Lailatkom Saida (good evening) play is an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Chorus Girl short story. The play casts actors Mohamed Ali Rizk, Mariam Al-Sokary, Marwa Eid, Nadeem Hisham, written and directed by Khaled Galal 

(Performances run daily except Wednesdays, 9pm).

 

Rawabet Art Space

Making its world premiere at the Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival, The One Who Lived in the House Before Me (France/Syria) showcases the work of illustrious Syrian poet Rasha Omran, a pioneer figure of contemporary Syrian poetry whose critically acclaimed writings have been translated into French, English, Italian and Swedish. The show features poems from her 2016 collection of the same name. 

A middle-aged woman recounts the highs and lows of her lonely life in a desolate city apartment. Listening to her grim retelling is the mocking ghost of another woman, a previous tenant who watches the narrator’s life unfold with sarcasm and moralizing zeal. The two women’s odd confrontations tell a timeless tale of love, alienation, and solitude. 

The One Who Lived in the House Before Me is an oratorio of three female voices who bring Omran’s words to the stage in a bold, multilingual reinterpretation. The writer herself performs her own poems in Arabic, while celebrated Syrian actress Nanda Mohamed performs the same poems in French. A third voice, played by renowned improviser Isabelle Duthoit, sings the poems at her turn in a mystical “language before language.” 

Directing this impressive cast is French independent theatre director Henri Jules Julien. The show’s technical director and light plastician is Christophe Cardoen, produced by Haraka Baraka 

(20 and 21 October, 8-9pm (Arabic and French).

 

Al-Salam Theatre

Dogs, a play produced by the Youth Theatre Company, starring the second batch of graduates of “Start Your Dream” workshop. The play is written by Gamal Hedeny, décor by Hamdy Attia, costumes designed by Amira Saber, and directed by Kamal Attia

Nogoum El-Dohr musical comedy show is directed by comedian Mohamed Sobhi, discusses the daily issues of Egyptians, featuring around 30 actors and singers from his troupe ‘Actors Studio,’ including the veteran Samir Abdel-Aziz. Co-written by Ayman Feteha, the show’s lyrics were written by Abdallah Hassan with the composition and music production of Sherif Hemdan

Farida play starring Aida Fahmy is an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s play Swan Song, written and directed by Akram Mustafa

Gana Hena play is produced by Al-Ghad Theatre. It casts Abeer Altokhy, Hala Sorour, Ahmed Alsherif, lyrics written by Masa'oud Shoman, music by Ahmed Alnasser, décor and costumes designed by Maye Zohdy, written by Safaa Albialy and directed by Mohamed Saber (6pm, free admission).
