Al Sowan play (France /Egypt) is an Egyptian play written and directed by French theatre-maker Pascal Rambert and translated by actress, director, and drama critic Menha El-Batrawy. This is Rambert’s first Egyptian play, written especially for the local audience at D-CAF – where it is set to make its World Premiere. The play brings together a dazzling cast, starring actors Magdy Atwan, Noha El-Kholy, Nanda Mohamed, Mohamed Hatem, Raafat El-Bayoumi, Sarrah Abdel-Rahman, Ahmed Malek, Laila Ghoneim, Marwan El-Gabalawy and Yehia Hussein (17 October until 5 November, 8pm).
The Woman Who Dwelt in the House Before (Syria / France) Poetry / Experimental Music / Theatre performance followed by a discussion and Q&A with director Henri Jules Julien as part of Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF) eleventh edition. A middle-aged woman recounts the highs and lows of her life in a city apartment. This desolate tale of loneliness, problems with alcohol and men, and menopause unfolds under the mocking gaze of another woman: a previous tenant who looks upon the narrator’s suffering with sarcasm and moral zeal. Their absurd confrontations make for a heart wrenching performance. Directed by Henri Jules Julien, The Woman Who Dwelt in the House Before draws on Syrian poet Rasha Omran’s 2017 collection of the same name. An oratorio of three female voices brings her words to life: Omran performs her own poems in Arabic, while actress Nanda Mohamed performs the same poems in French. A third voice, played by improviser Isabelle Duthoit, sings in a wordless “language before language.”
(19 and 20 October, 8pm).
Work.txt, a Play Without Actors (UK) interactive theatre performance followed by a discussion and Q&A (at the 1st performance only)
This is a show about work. But the worker isn’t here, so it’s down to you. You’ll clock in at the beginning. You’ll get short breaks at regular intervals. You’ll work in a team, and under your own initiative. You will be your own boss. You will be free. This is a show about the gig economy, financial instability and bullshit jobs.
Work.txt, written and directed by Nathan Ellis, takes place over the course of a work day, at the start of which one employee inexplicably stops working. The consequences of this strange event unfold throughout the show — performed entirely by its audience. Described by critics as “haunting” and “quietly apocalyptic,” this immersive performance takes debates about the modern workplace to their extremes
(1st performance (in Arabic) on 26 October, 8pm, 2nd performance (in English) on 27 October, 6pm and 3rd performance (in Arabic) on 27 October, 8pm).
