These government restrictions would lead to the establishment of the art of males performing female roles that is unique in the world. In the early 20th century, Nihonbuyo left Kabuki and took its own path, which has continued to this day and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology designated Nihonbuyo as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2023.
