This year's awards were announced at the AIPS Media Awards gala, which was held in Seoul, South Korea on Tuesday.
Abdel-Ghani's won the award for his column titled Overseas aid, published in the 28 june 2022 issue of the Al-Ahram Weekly, which discussed the potential success in bringing on a foreigner as a coach for Egypt's national team.
Overseas aid, beat out columns by Marcela Mora y Araujo of Argentina and Morgan Campbell of Canada, who came in second and third, respectively.
The column, which is full of information, humour and sarcasm, transcends football by weaving in larger stories of pride, strategy and past mistakes in Egyptian culture.
During the ceremony, Abdel-Ghani's son, who accepted the award in place of his father, delivered a message from the writer to other sports writers.
"Do not stop writing and do not stop expressing your word - we all work for the future of sports."
This year's AIPS Media Awards saw a wide range of submissions, with 1830 entries from 138 different countries in various languages.
Meanwhile, speaking at the event, AIPS President Gianni Merlo highlighted the importance of sports in finding solutions for society and fostering hope.
"If everybody is closed in himself, there’s no solution. Sport is hope and can find solutions in the society. Look how far we’ve made it, all around the world," Merlo said.
