The Red Devils avenged their loss to Zamalek in the African Super Cup just four weeks prior when they were beaten on penalties by their Cairo neighbours in Riyadh.
In a post-match press conference following Thursday’s match, Ahly’s Swiss coach Marcel Koller expressed his joy at winning the trophy. “We played an excellent match and were unfortunate not to capitalise on our chances in the first half, but we are happy with the win,” Koller said.
“We controlled the tempo of the game and won through penalties. Today’s win gives us momentum for the future. We prepared well for the match, but I want to thank the players for their efforts,” the 63-year-old tactician, in his third year with Ahly, said.
“At Ahly, we are expected to win all titles. We are extremely pleased with the Super Cup. It will give us a boost for the rest of the season,” Koller added.
On Tuesday evening, the Cairo giants beat UAE Al Ain 3-0 and qualified for the semi-final of the Intercontinental Cup.
