Egypt's U23 team coach Shawky Gharib commended his side for holding Spain to a 0-0 draw in their Olympic Games opener on Thursday, saying he was particularly impressed with their second-half display.

The young Pharaohs produced a resolute defensive display to keep the European heavyweights at bay, with Ahmed Hegazy and Mahmoud El-Wensh, two of the three over-age players in the team's squad, marshalling a five-man backline.

"I'm very happy with the display, especially in the second half as we were playing against a European heavyweight," Gharib told beIN Sports in a side-pitch interview.

"We were hindered by mis-passes in the first half but we notably improved after the break in terms of attack."

Egypt next face Argentina on Sunday before concluding their Group C campaign against Australia three days later.

"The start of any tournament is always difficult but we were up to it," Gharib added.

"We will wait for the result of Argentina and Australia game and we will plan our tactics for the next game accordingly."
