The 2021 AFCON has been in the center of controversy amid several reports that it would be canceled or postponed due to the surge of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
However, CAF and Cameroon officials maintain they are prepared to ready to safely hold the biannual tournament, which has already been postponed once in 2021.
Mosengo-Omba expressed his happiness about the efforts made by the Cameroonian government in preparation for the AFCON.
“The CAF president did not send me here to postpone the AFCON, and we do not have any plans for postponing it,” said Mosengo-Omba in a press conference.
“I am here to continue our discussions with the Cameroonian government to check its readiness, and I want to thank them for all their efforts,” he added.
“The medical protocol that we have prepared earlier has been submitted; CAF will supervise private labs doing COVID-19 tests, and we will have a plan to handle ill players in the emergency cases,” he explained.
Mosengo-Omba concluded his remarks by declaring that fans will still be able to attend the competition provided they have been vaccinated.
Cameroon is scheduled to host the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations from 9 January until 6 February.
