Egyptian Football Association (EFA) board member Mohamed Barakat announced on Friday that Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz will continue leading the national team regardless of the outcome in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Egypt are scheduled to face heavyweight Morocco on Sunday in the quarterfinals of AFCON 2021, that is taking place in Cameroon.

“Queiroz will stay in his position regardless of the result against Morocco,” Barakat, 46, a two-time AFCON winner with the Pharaohs, told a television programme on Friday.

“He will lead Egypt's national team during the game against Senegal [in March] in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers playoffs,” Barakat stressed.

The 68-year-old coach, who has an accomplished record with top national and local sides, took the lead of Egypt's national team in September, replacing former tactician Hossam El-Badry.

He since helped the Pharaohs to reach the playoffs of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

“We have been confident of Queiroz since he took helm of the team,” the EFA board member added.

The Portuguese coach came under fire for uninspiring performances in the group stage of the 2021 AFCON, which saw Egypt first lose 0-1 to Nigeria after being outplayed before labouring to a 1-0 wins over minnows Guinea-Bissau and Sudan.

However, the Pharaohs looked much improved against topflight Cote d'Ivoire in the the round of last 16, with the team defending doggedly and attacking consistently in a match that went to extra time, before eventually coming out on top 5-4 in penalty shootout.
