The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell renewed calls on Tuesday for a pause in the Israeli war on Gaza and condemned attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians in the West Bank.

After a series of calls with senior Arab officials, Borrell's office said he had "expressed great concern over attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians, which he firmly condemned".

On Saturday, EU's top diplomat warned of the "desperate situation" in Gaza, demanding a "pause of hostilities" to allow humanitarian aid to reach Palestinian civilians amid Israel's intense bombing of 2.3 million people in the strip.

Borrell condemned all attacks on civilians and called for the "immediate and unconditional" release of all captives.

EU leaders on Thursday debated calling for "pauses" in Israel's brutal war on Gaza to get aid into the Palestinian territory, as the bloc weighed how to respond to the conflict as fighting rages in Ukraine.

Israel is now 25 days into its war against the Palestinians and has so far killed at least 8,000 people in near-constant bombardments on the Gaza Strip, including some 3,500 children, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
