An Israeli airstrike early Sunday killed five Palestinians, including two women, two children, and a Civil Defence senior official, in Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, according to local sources.

WAFA news agency reported that four of the victims were from the same family and were killed when Israeli forces targeted their home in the Al-Alami area of the camp.

The Civil Defence in Gaza said the strike targeted the home of its deputy director for north Gaza, Mohammed Morsi, in the urban Jabaliya refugee camp, according to AP.

In addition, Israeli artillery fired shells at northern areas of the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.

The ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza since October 2023 has so far resulted in 40,939 documented Palestinian fatalities, with over 40,939 others injured.

Thousands of victims are feared to be trapped under rubble, inaccessible to emergency and Civil Defence teams due to Israeli attacks.

90 percent ready

The United States, along with Arab mediators Qatar and Egypt, has sought in recent weeks to bridge the remaining gap to reach a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Although United States officials insist a deal is close, no agreement has been reached yet.

US President Joe Biden said recently that “just a couple more issues” remain unresolved.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has swiftly called this assessment inaccurate.

Within hours, Secretary of State Antony Blinken insisted that 90 percent was done.

Blinken acknowledged that until a final "yes" from both sides is reached, the delicately negotiated package to wind down 11 months of bloodshed could break down at any time.

Each day could bring "an intervening event which simply pushes things off and runs the risk of derailing what is a pretty fragile apple cart," Blinken said Thursday.

The heads of the American and British foreign intelligence agencies said Saturday they are “working ceaselessly” for a ceasefire in Israel's war on Gaza, using a rare joint public statement to press for peace.

CIA Director William Burns said while 90 percent of the text has been agreed between the warring sides, “the last 10 percent is the last 10 percent for a reason because it’s the hardest part to do.”

Biden personally presented a plan on 31 May that would stop fighting for an initial six weeks and see both sides release prisoners.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks has been the Gaza border with Egypt, the Philadelphi Corridor. Netanyahu has demanded a presence by Israeli troops who seized posts from Hamas.

US mediators are looking at a formula on where and when Israeli troops pull out, with the deal speaking of withdrawal from "densely populated" areas.
