In a post on platform X late Monday, Sanders stated that "Trump said he wants to 'clean out' Gaza and push the millions of Palestinians living there into neighboring countries." He added that "there is a name for this — ethnic cleansing — and it’s a war crime. This outrageous idea should be condemned by every American."
On Monday, President Trump reiterated his desire to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to "safer" locations such as Egypt or Jordan, announcing that he would meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington "very soon."
On Saturday, Trump suggested the idea of "cleaning out" Gaza, claiming that over 15 months of war had reduced the Palestinian territory to a "demolition site." When questioned about his comments, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he would "like to get them living in an area where they can live without disruption and revolution and violence so much."
Trump has also held discussions in recent days with Jordan's King Abdullah II, who has historically opposed the displacement of Palestinians.
Almost all of the Gaza Strip's 2.4 million inhabitants have been displaced since the Israeli war on Gaza erupted on October 7, 2023. A ceasefire currently in effect is set to last six weeks, allowing for the release of 33 captives held in Gaza in exchange for approximately 1,900 Palestinian prisoners.
During this initial phase, the terms for the second phase will be negotiated to secure the release of remaining captives and bring the war to a definitive conclusion. The final stage will involve the reconstruction of Gaza and the return of the bodies of the last captives who died in captivity.
Former President Joe Biden's administration had drawn up a series of plans for the post-war period in Gaza, but Trump has yet to reference them.
