Al Jazeera’s correspondent also reported fierce clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters near Shifa Hospital and the Al-Nasser neighbourhood in central Gaza City, with heavy gunfire heard in the area. Israeli helicopters were reportedly firing on positions near the ongoing skirmishes.
Following the attack, Israeli military sources confirmed that five soldiers sustained serious injuries during battles in northern Gaza. The injured included a medical officer, an armored corps officer, and three soldiers from the 82nd Battalion, who were evacuated to hospitals in Tel Aviv and Beersheba for treatment.
The security incident came a day after the armed wing of Hamas, the Al-Qassam Brigades, urged the Israeli military on Sunday to temporarily halt airstrikes and withdraw from part of Gaza City to help locate two Israeli captives it said it had lost contact with.
