Heavy Israeli bombardment hits southern Gaza amid ongoing ceasefire violations

The Israeli occupation army launched intense artillery and air attacks on southern Gaza on Monday, continuing its violations of the ceasefire agreement.

Israeli artillery and airstrikes targeted the eastern areas of Khan Younis, inside the so-called “yellow line,” which Israel uses to mark zones under its control within the strip, Al Jazeera reported on Monday.

Local media said Israeli forces fired toward displacement tents near the Austrian neighbourhood west of Khan Younis. Heavy and continuous shelling also hit eastern Rafah, which remains under full Israeli control.

A medical source confirmed that a young Palestinian man was killed by Israeli gunfire near the yellow line in the Zeitoun neighbourhood, south of Gaza City.

Israeli aircraft also struck east of the Tuffah neighbourhood in central Gaza, according to local reports.

On Sunday, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that the death toll from Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza had risen to 70,103 Palestinians, with 170,985 injured.

The ministry said that since the ceasefire came into effect on 10 October, 356 Palestinians had been killed by Israeli fire.

Despite the ceasefire, Israel has continued to violate the truce with daily attacks across Gaza.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian territory remains in a deep humanitarian crisis as Israel continues to choke off aid delivery, limiting access to essential supplies and services.

On Thursday, Amnesty International released an extensive report saying Israel is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip over a month after a ceasefire came into effect.

It warned that the truce has just created a “dangerous illusion” of improvement while conditions in Gaza remain catastrophic.

In another development, the Israeli army said it had killed 40 Palestinian fighters trapped in tunnels near Rafah over the past week.

Back-channel negotiations aimed at resolving the standoff over Hamas fighters in Rafah had previously collapsed. Israel insisted that the fighters exit the tunnels, surrender, and hand over their weapons to Israeli forces, conditions that Hamas rejected.

Last week, Hamas said that the ongoing pursuit, killing, and arrests of its fighters in the Rafah tunnels demonstrate Tel Aviv's attempts to undermine the ceasefire deal.

In a statement, Hamas condemned Israel’s actions as “a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.”

“We hold Israel fully responsible for the lives of our fighters and call on mediators to take immediate action to pressure Israel to allow our sons to return home,” the statement said.
