Medical and emergency officials and eyewitnesses said the Israeli strike hit a civilian car southwest of Gaza City, killing five people and wounding more than 25 others.
The Israeli occupation forces stated they carried out the strike in coordination with the Shin Bet domestic security agency, targeting “a senior Hamas commander” in Gaza City.
Israel’s public broadcaster identified the target as Raed Saad, describing him as the second-in-command of its armed wing, the Qassam Brigades.
Hamas did not officially confirm Saad’s death but said Israel would bear full responsibility for the consequences of the attack.
In a statement, the Palestinian resistance group accused Israel of continuing what it called “criminal violations” of the ceasefire agreement, saying the strike represented a dangerous escalation aimed at undermining and sabotaging the truce.
Hamas called on mediators and guarantor countries to intervene urgently to halt the ongoing Israeli breaches, including air strikes and the continued blockade on the strip.
Tel Aviv has continued to violate the terms of the truce, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and the US in October, carrying out tens of strikes that killed and wounded hundreds of Palestinians in the strip, in what Amnesty described last week as the continuing Israei genocide in Gaza.
In tandem, Israeli occupation forces have maintained tight restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid and winter supplies to 2.3 million Palestinians battling the spectre of hunger and death from cold conditions in the strip.
