Israeli occupation forces began large-scale demolition operations on Wednesday, targeting residential buildings in Nur Shams refugee camp, east of Tulkarm in the occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian news agency WAFA.

WAFA said Israeli bulldozers entered the Al-Maslakh neighbourhood of the camp and started demolishing buildings under a plan to level 25 structures comprising more than 100 housing units. Residents of these homes had already been forcibly displaced during the most recent Israeli assault on the camp.

Tulkarm Governor Abdullah Kamil described the escalation as a serious and dangerous development aimed at weakening the Palestinian presence in refugee camps, which he said stand as living reminders of the 1948 Palestinian Nakba.

He said the demolitions amount to collective punishment of civilians and constitute a clear violation of international law, international conventions, and human rights standards.

The demolitions come amid an ongoing campaign of pressure on camp residents, who have faced forced evacuation orders since the start of the Israeli offensive 326 days ago.

Israeli occupation forces have also imposed a tight siege on the camp and its surroundings, during which dozens of residential buildings were demolished over the past summer.

According to earlier figures from the Popular Committee for Services in Nur Shams camp, more than 11,500 residents have been forcibly displaced from the camp and nearby neighbourhoods, and more than 750 housing units have been destroyed or bulldozed.

The occupation forces also caused partial or total damage to around 230 private and commercial vehicles and 260 commercial establishments.

Several public institutions were destroyed or damaged, including mosques, kindergartens, a rehabilitation centre for people with disabilities, a youth social centre, and the office of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
