“We welcome reports of that development and extend our condolences to his family. The full implementation of the ceasefire arrangements in Gaza is absolutely critical,” said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
“The secretary-general urges all parties to move forward in good faith and without delay with subsequent phases, facilitate sustained and unhindered humanitarian access, including through the Rafah crossing, and uphold international humanitarian law,” Dujarric told a daily press briefing.
The UN will continue to support the full implementation of the agreement, he said.
Guterres once again urged all stakeholders to establish a credible political path forward toward ending the Israeli occupation, recognizing the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people and leading to a two-state solution, in line with international law and UN resolutions, the spokesman said.
The remarks come as Israel’s stated "justification" for delaying key provisions of the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire has fallen away after its military announced the recovery and identification of the remains of the last Israeli captive held in the territory.
Israel has continued to violate the ceasefire in Gaza, which has been in place since 11 October 2025. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, at least 484 people have been killed and 1,321 others wounded since the fragile truce began.
On Monday, a Palestinian was killed after being shot by Israeli occupation forces in Jabalia, north of the Gaza Strip, bringing the number of people killed since Monday morning to four.
Hospitals in the Gaza Strip had earlier received three bodies, including one recovered from beneath the rubble, in addition to 20 injured.
Medical sources said the total number of people killed since the ceasefire came into effect has risen to 486, with 1,341 injured, while 714 bodies have been recovered during the same period.
Israel has continued to enforce its blockade and heavily restrict winter shelters and life-saving aid, failing to abide by ceasefire terms that demanded unfettered aid access for the famine-hit territory.
On Saturday, a three-month-old infant died from severe cold, bringing the number of infant deaths from cold weather since the start of the winter season to 10.
Since Israel's genocidal war on Gaza began on 7 October 2023, Israel has killed 71,660 Palestinians and wounded 171,419 others, according to Gaza's health ministry. Most of the dead are women and children.
