Abu Safiya, 53, a prominent Palestinian paediatrician and neonatologist, has been held without charge by the Israeli occupation for more than 500 days, and this court appearance marks the first time he has been seen publicly since February 2025.

He has been held in Israeli prison since December 2024, when he was detained during an Israeli army raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital as the occupation army attempted to ethnically cleanse northern Gaza from its Palestinian inhabitants.

Abu Safiya’s lawyers appealed for his release, citing more than 500 days in jail without formal charges as well as his deteriorating health condition, with significant weight loss and ongoing medical issues.

Abu Safiya is one of 14 Palestinian doctors from Gaza detained by Israel for more than a year without charge.

Physicians ‌for Human Rights Israel say the doctors had been denied adequate medical care or food and had been physically abused.

The Israeli occupation army has destroyed tens of Palestinian hospitals and health facilities in Gaza, and killed hundreds of doctors and healthcare workers, as part of the genocidal war on the strip.
