Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi said that his team already learned lessons from Monday’s African Cup of Nations opener against Angola, highlighting errors on the defence as a key reason for the draw.

The Desert Warriors were held to a 1-1 draw by Angola in prestigious tournament opener; a result that denied the 2019 champions a winning debut.

“This is not the result we expected. We were expecting to have three points. We tried our best and didn’t want to lose the game so we did what we could do to get a point, which was necessary,” Belmadi was quoted as saying by CAF’s official website after the match.

“We were supposed to do better in the second half but we can also talk about the moments we did well. We have identified our weakness as we didn’t defend very well for us to concede the penalty which was a big mistake,” he added.

Algeria’s next game will be against Burkina Faso on Saturday, before facing Mauritania in the group stage’s last game on 23 January.

In AFCON 2021, the two-time African Cup of Nations winners Algeria failed to progress beyond the group stage, finishing at the bottom of their group with just one point.

Despite this, the 47-year-old Belmadi hopes learning from the technical errors of yesterday will improve the team’s performance this time in Cote d'Ivoire.

“We are in a transitional period so we try for this team to work together and we have also learned lessons from this game for our remaining games,” the coach added.

“We made some technical mistakes but it’s not professional to start a tournament with the mindset of a loser so we will prepare for the match against Burkina Faso to put things right,” he concluded.
