The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a 40 percent increase in the prize money for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to an official statement on Thursday.

"We have increased the Prize Money of the AFCON Winner to $7 million, which is a 40 percent increase from the previous AFCON Prize Money," said CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

"I am confident that a portion of the Prize Money will contribute to developing football and benefit all football stakeholders, as well as support our Member Associations with their administrative needs," Motsepe added.

The runner-up of AFCON Côte d'Ivoire 2023 will now be awarded $4 million. Each of the two semi-finalists will receive $2.5 million, while each of the four quarter-finalists will be granted $1.3 million.

The recent increases -- according to Motsepe -- are an indicator of "the significant progress" made by CAF over the past two years.

The AFCON 2023 finals are scheduled to take place in Cote d'Ivoire from 13 January to 11 February 2024.
