Egyptian giants Ahly have been handed a $5,000 fine by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after their fans lit fireworks before a Champions League game in Morocco in April.

CAF imposed the sanctions after a meeting of its disciplinary board in Cairo on Sunday, the African governing body said in a statement on its website.

Ahly's visiting supporters used firecrackers before the team's game away to Moghreb Tetouan in the first leg of the Champions League last 16, which the home side won 1-0 via a last-gasp free-kick.

Tetouan prevailed on penalty shootout after losing the second leg 1-0 in Cairo.

Ahly play their home matches behind closed doors due to security concerns after several ill-fated incidents involving fans, the last of which was in February when 20 Zamalek supporters were killed due to a stampede after being tear-gassed by security forces before a Premier League game.
