Egyptian athletes smashed records at the African Games in Morocco, sweeping to an emphatic victory in August.
The country came on top with a bang, securing a total of 273 medals (102 gold, 98 silver and 73 bronze), far ahead of second-placed Nigeria, who won 127 medals (46 gold, 33 silver and 48 bronze). South Africa came third with 87 medals (36 gold, 26 silver and 25 bronze medals).
Egypt won the most medals at a single edition of the African Games since its inaugural version in 1965 in Congo.
The Egyptians appeared in 22 out of 26 sports in the 2019 African Games, winning medals in every single event they took part in. The Morocco edition featured 54 countries and almost 6,000 athletes.
The most medals collected by Egypt came in Weightlifting (56 medals), while swimming came second with 41 medals.
Other medals won by Egypt came in swimming (41), fencing (19), gymnastics (18), wrestling (15), karate (14), athletics (11), tennis (11), taekwondo (11), tennis (10), table tennis (10), canoeing (9), judo (8), rowing (8), archery (6), badminton (6), shooting (6), boxing (4), triathlon (2), volleyball (2), 3x3 basketball (1), equestrian (1) as well as non-Olympic sports chess (8) and snooker (3).
In the previous edition in 2015 in Congo, Egypt won 217 medals (85 gold, 63 silver and 69 bronze).
