Egypt's Wadi Degla named Cypriot Nikodimos Papavasiliou as their new coach following the sacking of Greek boss Takis Gonias, the club announced on Friday.

Degla did not disclose the length of the contract, saying in a brief statement that Papavasiliou had led Friday's training session after being unveiled.

Papavasiliou replaces Gonias, who was dismissed early this month following a string of poor results.

Gonias was credited with introducing a brand of attractive, possession-based football but Degla hardly coped with his strategy this season to drop to second from bottom in the Egyptian Premier League table.

Papavasiliou's immediate task will be ensuring that Degla stay in the top flight. They are currently just one point off the safety zone.

The 49-year-old managed several clubs in Cyprus, including Olympiakos Nicosia and Apollon Limassol. He also had a successful spell in Slovakia, where he helped Slovan Bratislava reach the domestic cup final in 2016.

Papavasiliou's last spell was at Greek club Panionios, which he has recently left.
