Ahly’s Swiss coach Rene Weiler proposed a solution for resuming the Egyptian Premier League, insisting that playing football could have a positive impact on fighting coronavirus.

In March, all Egyptian football activities were suspended indefinitely over the worldwide coronavirus outbreak.

"I am not the decision maker and sure I will accept any decision by the football association regarding the league's future. We hope safety for all as the whole world is currently suffering," the 46-year-old coach said in an interview with On Time Sports on Tuesday.

"On a personal level, I hope to find solutions for resuming football matches as the current suspension is a sad fact, especially for football fans," he added.

Weiler, who joined the Cairo giants at the beginning of the current season, has had an outstanding performance with the Reds, leading the team in 31 games, losing in two matches, tying in four, and winning 25.

Until the suspension, holders Ahly were strong candidates for the title this season as they currently lead the league table with 49 points from 17 matches, 16 points ahead of second placed Arab Contractors.

"I hope that the suspension wouldn't last for a long time. Clubs can be isolated in sterilized hotels and venues, besides playing the league in a tournament-like format," Weiler explained.

"Playing football could have a positive impact on players and could protect them from picking up coronavirus. Also, this would please the fans who are isolated at home through watching matches.

"Resuming matches could grant fans positive energy to fight coronavirus," the coach concluded.
