The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has hailed the first ever all-Egyptian African Champions League final between arch-rivals Ahly and Zamalek.
Zamalek crushed Raja 3-1 Wednesday at Cairo Stadium in the second leg semifinal of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League, qualifying for the final to meet Cairo giants Ahly — the first ever Champions League final to include the arch rivals.
“EFA headed by Amr El-Gnainy congratulates Zamalek, its players and their technical staff after well-deservedly qualifying for the final of the CAF Champions League,” EFA said in an official statement.
“EFA confirms that this great victory, and the joining of Zamalek with Ahly in the final to guarantee the title to Egypt, indicate the restoration of Egyptian football to its African leadership since the U-23 national team won the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations, booking a ticket to the Olympic Games,” the statement added.
Ahly qualified for the Champions League final after beating Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca 5-1 on aggregate.
At the end of the statement EFA reaffirmed its determination to move forward on the path of achievements and the desired renaissance of Egyptian football according to sound and thoughtful foundations that seek nothing but the public interest.
