Egyptian Football Association (EFA) deputy president Hassan Farid has said Ahly’s African success could bring forward the start of the Egyptian Premier League season.

“Ahly players have accomplished a great success despite the difficulties Egyptian football is witnessing,” Farid was quoted as saying on the official EFA website.

The Cairo giants won the African Champions League after beating Esperance of Tunisia 3-2 on aggregate.

“The African trophy boosts the association's efforts to resume the league season,” he added.

The Egyptian league has been suspended since 1 February when 72 Ahly fans died in the Port Said disaster. Ahly fans have been protesting against a resumption of the league before the perpetrators of the disaster are brought to justice. They have vowed to disrupt any domestic match held before the judgment.
